An Illustrated Gazetteer of Anglo-Saxon Churches

Further Information

Aims of the Project

The long-term aim of the project is to provide a comprehensive on-line illustrated gazetteer of Anglo-Saxon and Saxo-Norman churches.

The format for each entry will be the same:

Introduction

The dedication of the church, location and county.

The number of the relevant O.S. 1:50,000 sheet and a six figure grid reference.

Links will download the relevant section of the O.S. 1:50, 000 map
and the same area as a 1:50, 000 aerial photograph.

Plan and Section

In the case of larger and more complex churches, a plan and section drawing will be provided with "hotspots" linking to the corresponding section of the illustrated notes.

Brief Description and History

This consists of a brief description of the church in its present day form, together with a brief history of its development.

Illustrated Notes

This section contains detailed descriptions of Anglo-Saxon features illustrated with small photographs. Each of these photographs links to a large, high-resolution copy of the same photograph.

Bibliography

A tab on each page of the introductory section of the gazetteer links to the bibliography for the entire project.

Within the individual entry for each church, bibliographic references link to the bibliography.

Clicking on the reference will open the bibliography in a separate window with the relevant entry at the top of the page. e.g.

Taylor & Taylor (1965)

If the reference is to a paper within an edited collection of papers, then the reference will contain a link to the main volume. e. g.

Heighway & Bryant (1986)
