An Illustrated Gazetteer of Anglo-Saxon Churches

As a field archaeologist, I have always believed that the best way to get to know a site, whether a building or an earthwork, is to visit it. However, an actual visit may not always be possible, especially in the case of students living in other countries.

This site, therefore, is an attempt to provide a "second best". In its final form, it will consist of gazetteer of Anglo-Saxon churches, each entry of which will provide a "virtual tour" consisting of plans and elevations, photographs and explanatory notes. The photographs included within the text are small and do not require much bandwidth. However, each small photograph links to a large, high-resolution photograph - these have large file sizes and are intended to be downloaded when details need to be more closely examined.

Students are welcome to use these photographs in their academic work, but please note that the photographs must be properly credited. (see here for further details.)

I have made no attempt to use videos or computer simulated panoramic photographs. At the moment, videos that have small enough file sizes to be used over the Internet have poor definition, while panoramic photographs introduce an unacceptable level of distortion.

Finally, please note that this site is not intended to replace the normal published sources. Bibliographic references are provided in the text: clicking on these references will open the bibliography in a new window. The reference will be at the top of the page.
(see here for further details.)

At the moment, the site is very much "work in progress" and I would be very grateful for any feedback or constructive criticism. Please send your comments to:
